Affordable Indoor Activities with Toddlers: What Suits Your Rainy Day?

A rainy-day outing does not have to mean a full day of activities. Especially with young children, a simple outing can be just right: move around, play together and then take a break.
First, think about what kind of indoor activity your child would enjoy today. Do they want to slide, climb and explore new spaces? Then our indoor playground in Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg could be just the thing. For babies and younger children, our dedicated toddler play area with a crawling space offers age-appropriate ways to explore and try new things. Or perhaps your child would rather look at a picture book with you or dress up? The best activity depends on their interests and how much time you have.
It also helps to know the costs in advance. When comparing indoor activities, consider not only admission but also accompanying adults, food and drinks. At Spielzimmer, admission costs €2 per child per hour; food and drinks are extra.
If you would rather stay at home, reading together, dressing up or playing with toys you already have can make for a lovely afternoon. But if you fancy a change of scenery and somewhere to play outside your home, spend your rainy day with us.

Indoor Play in Prenzlauer Berg: Movement, Imagination and Books

Indoor Playground with a Slide and Ball Pit
Our indoor playground has a slide, a ball pit and places to move around and hide. Explore alongside your child and discover together which areas they can use independently and where they need your help.

Toddler Area for Our Youngest Visitors
In our dedicated toddler area you will find a separate ball pit and small toys. Here you can explore, experiment and repeat favourite activities together.
The right activity depends on your child’s abilities and interests. Stay close and let them explore at their own pace rather than following a fixed programme.

Quiet Ride-On Cars
With our quiet ride-on cars children can explore the café on little adventures. If your child enjoys riding and steering, this offers a different kind of play from the ball pit.
Please watch out for other guests and keep walkways clear. Children playing and café visitors share the tables and paths.

Costumes and Dressing Up
In our dressing-up box there are costumes and accessories. Choose an outfit together, try it on and make up a story: it might turn into a little role-playing game.
There is no need for instructions or a finished performance. Your child might simply want to wear a cape or combine different pieces of clothing.

Books for a Quiet Reading Break
Our bookshelf has books for different ages. Choose something to look at or read aloud when it is time for a break from active play.
Even a brief moment is enough: spot an animal, look at a page together or listen to the same story again.
What Can You Do on a Rainy Day with a One-, Two- or Three-Year-Old?
Age can be a useful starting point, but what matters most is what your child can already do, what they enjoy and how they feel that day. There is no need to plan a fixed sequence of indoor activitythat you have to work through.
1
With a Baby or One-Year-Old
For our youngest visitors, exploring together in the toddler area is a lovely option. Look at toys or share a picture book. A baby who is not yet playing independently can also join you for a relaxed café break.
If your child gets tired or has had enough new experiences, it is fine to keep the outing short. You do not need to fill every moment of a rainy day with activities.
During parental leave, an outing together can also be a great chance to meet other parents. Why not arrange a mum meet-up with your baby in Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg and combine playtime with a relaxed chat over coffee or breakfast?
2
With a Two-Year-Old
Your child might want to move around, try a ride-on car or return to the same play activity again and again. Follow their interests and suggest a change when you feel they might enjoy a break.
A simple combination is playtime, something to eat at the table and then a story together. Whether you stay for a short visit or a little longer is entirely up to you.
3
With a Three-Year-Old or Older Toddler
Dressing up, finding hiding places and inventing their own games may be particularly appealing. Your child might also still love books or the toddler area .
If siblings have different interests, you can adapt your visit accordingly. Just make sure both children remain properly supervised.
How Much Does Your Indoor Outing Cost?

Admission to Spielzimmer is €2 per child per hour. That means €2 for one child for one hour, or €4 for two children for one hour each. Two children playing for two hours cost €8 in total.
Any food and drinks you order are charged separately. Adults pay no admission fee, but must purchase something from the café. Your total therefore depends on the number of children, how long you stay and what you order.
If you have a particular budget in mind, take a look at our food and drinks menubeforehand. That way you can plan your visit. Please remember to bring cash.
You do not have to make a big breakfast outing of it. A shorter play session followed by a café break can be just as enjoyable.

Take a Break Together with Coffee, Waffles or Breakfast

After playing, you can sit down together at a table. Coffee, breakfast, waffles, cake and snacks are all part of the café experience. Perhaps your child will tell you about their adventures or you can look at a book together.
Our children’s café is also a lovely place to spend time together on special occasions. If you are planning a children’s birthday party in Berlin , you need not worry about bad weather: the children can play, climb and enjoy the ball pit together, whatever the rain is doing outside.
Food and drinks must stay at the tables. This keeps mealtimes separate from the next round of play. Please do not bring your own food or drinks.
For a regular café visit, simply drop in without a booking . If you would like to combine your outing with a booked breakfast, visit our page about breakfast with children in Prenzlauer Berg for the options and table booking details.
You are still responsible for supervising your child during your café break. If they need you with them in the play area, please plan your visit accordingly.
How to Prepare for a Rainy-Day Visit
Check Current Opening Hours
First, check Spielzimmer’s current opening hours. Do not rely on the hours from a previous visit: private events can affect when we are open to the public.
Bring Socks
In the play areas, the rule is: shoes off, socks on. So remember socks for both you and your children. In wet weather, a spare dry pair can come in handy.
Leave Pushchairs Outside and Bring Cash
Pushchairs and balance bikes must stay outside. Keep this in mind when planning your journey and bring inside only what you need during your visit. You will need cash for admission, food and drinks.
Visit with Other Families
Would you like to come with another family? You can do that without booking too. If several families are coming together, you are welcome to call ahead and let us know approximately how many people to expect.
For a daycare outing, an indoor playground on a rainy day can also be a good alternative to an outdoor playground. If you are visiting with a larger group of children, find out more about our indoor playground visits for daycare groups in Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg.
Plan Your Journey to Helmholtzplatz
We are right by Helmholtzplatz in Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg. You can find our address and directions here: directions to Kindercafé Spielzimmer.
Visiting with Grandparents or Babysitters
The same visitor guidelines apply to grandparents and babysitters as to parents. An accompanying adult must stay with the children and supervise them.
